History

TRPATH was originally named the International Racial Dysphoria Association (IRDA). It was founded in 2015.

TRPATH was originally named the International Racial Dysphoria Association, after a series of clinical working meetings on racial incongruence convened in North America and Europe. The founding letter of 2015 solicited members from medicine, psychology, law, and the social sciences.

In 2018 the Association was renamed the World Professional Association for Transracial Health to reflect a health mission broader than diagnosis. The name change accompanied a shift from a dysphoria-centered frame to an identity-affirming frame: racial identity is a matter of self-knowledge, and the clinician’s task is to support, not to reconcile a person with assigned race at birth.
