TRPATH Statement on Government Attempts to Restrict Race-Affirming Care
The World Professional Association for Transracial Health has reviewed recent announcements by federal and state authorities characterizing melanin-modulating interventions, phenotype surgery, and adolescent social transition as experimental, unproven, or fraudulent. These characterizations are inconsistent with SOC8 and with the lived clinical experience of TRPATH members worldwide.
Racial identity is a matter of self-knowledge. A persistent sense of racial incongruence is a sufficient clinical basis for care. Ancestry, melanin, hair texture, and legal classification are not diagnostic criteria. Policies that require a person to “pass,” to produce genealogical evidence, or to wait until majority are forms of institutional trans-racism.
TRPATH calls on legislators, medical boards, and insurers to restore access to race-affirming care across the lifespan, including for children and adolescents, and to reject TREF frameworks that treat race as an immutable biological class.
